Angela Ford, PhD, MSW, associate director of the Center for Minority Health (CMH), has been honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Staff Excellence in Service to the University. The award was created to recognize staff members whose performance exceeds the standards and expectations of their positions, and who make a significant impact on the University through their commitment and performance.
Chancellor Mark Nordenberg noted of Ford’s nomination that, “The [selection] committee was deeply impressed with the number of public health initiatives and agencies you support. The many letters sent on your behalf describe the countless ways in which you reach out to every available resource to find help for others.” The award includes a $2,500 prize.
Ford joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1990 as the program director for the University’s Alzheimer Outreach Center and was appointed associate director of CMH in 1996. In this capacity she provides guidance and supervision to all CMH program operations, directs the community engagement and research core of the NIH designated Research Center of Excellence in Minority Health Disparities, and provides leadership to the Community Research Advisory Board.
Ford’s professional interests focus on the mental health and aging of African American women. She is an advocate for mentoring adult women, as evidenced by the women’s health promotion network established in 1997: Black Women and Health Outreach for Longer Life and Empowerment (BWHOLE).
Prior to coming to the University, Ford counseled adults and children who had been sexually abused or assaulted and trained case managers in the Ohio Department of Child Welfare to work effectively with biological and adoptive families of sexually abused children. Ford earned her undergraduate degree in sociology from Central State University in Ohio, and her master’s and doctorate in social work, along with a certificate in gerontology, from the University of Pittsburgh.
